Today we have an interesting reading lesson.
II. Introduction of the Lesson (3 minutes)
Teacher:
Our lesson today is called “The Last Leaf.”
It is an extract from a story written by O. Henry.
In this lesson we will read, discuss the story
and speak about visiting the doctor and illness.
III. Competency
Competency: The pupils should have a talk about their visiting the doctor.
Teacher explains:
By the end of the lesson you should be able to
talk about illness, visiting the doctor,
and retell the story using your own words.
IV. Vocabulary Work (6 minutes)
Teacher: Look at the new words from the text. Listen and repeat after me.

V. Pre-reading Activity (3 minutes)
Teacher: Before reading, answer these questions:
- Have you ever been ill?
- Have you visited a doctor?
- How do you feel when you are ill?
Students answer orally.
VI. Reading – The Last Leaf – Part One (10 minutes)
Teacher: Now open your books. Read the text silently and carefully.
Do not translate every word. Try to understand the main idea and the feelings of the characters.
(Teacher may read one paragraph aloud as a model.)
VII. Reading Comprehension – Exercise 1 – Answer the questions (6 minutes)
Teacher asks:
- Where did Sue often meet Johnsy?
- Why did the girls come to a small café every day?
- What kind of girl was Johnsy?
- Did the girls like the same things or different things?
- Why did the doctor go to Johnsy?
- Why did Johnsy count the leaves?
Students answer in full sentences.
VIII. Speaking and Discussion – Exercise 2 (4 minutes)
Teacher: Now discuss the text in English.
- What do you think about Johnsy?
- Why did she lose hope?
- What kind of friend was Sue?
Students share their opinions.
IX. Grammar and Vocabulary Practice – Exercise 3 – Complete the sentences (5 minutes)
Teacher: Complete the sentences using the text.
- Kamol was small and quiet, with big blue eyes and light hair.
- They liked the same things in art and music, the same poems and salads.
- They didn’t have much money, but they were young and full of hope.
- When the last leaf falls, I must go, too.
- I don’t want to think, and I don’t want to wait.
- These strange ideas come to you because you are ill.
Teacher checks answers.
X. Retelling the Story – Exercise 4 (5 minutes)
Teacher: Tell the story of “The Last Leaf.” Use these points:
- About the two girls and their friendship
- What happened to them
- Why Johnsy lost her interest in everything
Students retell the story orally.
XI. Speaking Practice – Talking about Visiting the Doctor (4 minutes)
Teacher: Now talk about your own experience. Answer these questions:
- When did you last visit a doctor?
- Why did you go there?
- What advice did the doctor give you?
Students speak freely.
XII. Reflection and Assessment (2 minutes)
Teacher:
- What did you learn today?
- What lesson does this story teach us?
Teacher gives feedback and evaluates participation.
XIII. Homework
- Retell the story “The Last Leaf” in written form (10–12 sentences).
- Write a short paragraph about a time when you visited a doctor.
